Celebrities Who Praised Olivia Rodrigo's Song 'Drivers License'

The love for Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Drivers License” is still going strong!

Upon its release in January 2021, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star’s song went straight to the top, literally. The former Disney Channel star’s debut into solo music hit no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and she called the single’s success “quite insane” during an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music at the time. Once the song dropped, fans were quick to speculate that the lyrics were about her rumored ex-boyfriend and costar, Joshua Bassett, and his apparent new relationship with Sabrina Carpenter. We won’t unpack all that drama again, but all three stars have addressed social media speculation surrounding “Drivers License.”

“I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song,” Olivia told Billboard in January 2021. “It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.”

The song’s popularity was skyrocketed into another stratosphere when Saturday Night Live did an entire skit about it in February 2021. “I was absolutely floored. I was screaming. I think being made fun of and parodied on SNL is the biggest compliment in the whole world, so that was so surreal,” Olivia told Radio.com in March 2021. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that they were going to do a ‘Driver’s License’ sketch where they played the entirety of ‘Driver’s License.'”

Not only has the track touched listeners of every age group, but celebs have spoken out online and praised the breakup anthem! Gwen Stefani, for one, called the songstress “a master at turning her heartbreak into something glorious,” in a profile for Time magazine’s “2021 TIME100 Next.”

“By pouring her heart out with so much courage and total command of her talent, Olivia made magic,” Gwen wrote. “And for anyone going through their first heartbreak, Olivia’s voice is a light in the dark, a promise that your pain can someday become a deep source of power.”

And Gwen’s not the only one! Due to the song’s popularity, Olivia has struck up a friendship with musicians she looked up to in the past, including Taylor Swift. “It’s so surreal to have my idols become my peers so quickly,” she told Radio.com. “It’s just so insane.”

“I remember first hearing [‘Drivers License’] and being like, ‘This is an incredible tune,’ and then finding out she was like 17,” the singer said on SiriusXM in July 2021. “That was the age when I started writing songs, and I did not write a song of that calibre. I couldn’t sing at that calibre either.”

He added, “She’s an extreme talent. She’s a very special artist. Very special.”

Kim Kardashian

After news broke in February 2021 that the reality star and husband Kanye West had split, Kim took to Instagram Stories and showed fans that she was listening to “Drivers License.” Months later, the reality star shared via social media that she had received a package from Olivia, noting that she listens to the song “all the time.”

The singer said his brothers both sent him the song. “I listened to it. And so I was like, ‘Wow, this is great,’” Nick gushed during an appearance on Apple Music with Zane Lowe. “It actually reminded me of some of the things I love about musical theater and didn’t really make the connection that it was her. But there was another song from the High School Musical show that I really loved, as well. ‘All I Want.’ And I was like, ‘Man, she’s super talented, super young, and able to speak to these things that are sort of these big, universal themes.'”

Taylor Swift

After Olivia shared that she was next to her idol, Taylor, on the iTunes Charts, the songstress commented, “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud.”

While chatting with Radio.com, Olivia also revealed that Taylor sent her a letter. “I opened it for the first time, so I’m still reeling,” she said. “Literally my tears are on it, my snot from sobbing my eyes out are on it. I love her.”

The rapper took to Twitter and had a fun interaction with Olivia while chatting about the song.

“Just like that girl wrote a song about getting her drivers license Imma write a song about the struggle of not having a drivers license. I really wanted my McDonald’s at 4 a.m. last night instead of today but I couldn’t so I [fell] asleep hungry,” Cardi wrote. Olivia responded, “Girl, I will pick u up and take u wherever u wanna go.”
