If you aren’t already, prepare to become obsessed with Joshua Bassett! The actor, who fans may recognize from his roles in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Stuck in the Middle, just stepped into the world of music and has released his debut single, “Common Sense.”

In honor of the new song (which we cannot stop listening to!), the star just spilled all the tea exclusively to J-14 on who inspired it, his writing process, the other music he’s got in the works and his plans to hit the road!

J-14: Tell us about “Common Sense!” What’s it about?

Joshua Bassett: “Common Sense” is about that universally experienced dilemma of the heart, when love is unrequited, or your friends, family and “common sense” say someone is a bad idea, but you can’t help loving them anyway.

J-14: Was it inspired by anyone or anything in your real life?

Joshua: Ha! I think we’ve all been in a place of feeling unrequited love, or longing for someone we probably shouldn’t…

J-14: Is it nerve-wracking to release something so personal to you?

Joshua: It’s both scary and freeing! Being honest and vulnerable, while not always easy, is worthwhile in the end, every time.

J-14: What’s your writing process like?

Joshua: It’s different every time! This song happened pretty magically. Whatever comes first — a lyric, melody, song idea, guitar or piano part — if it stands out, I write it down or record it and run with it!

J-14: Any plans to release more music? Maybe an album?

Joshua: Absolutely! I’m taking my time to ensure it’s the best that it can be. Stay tuned!

J-14: What about a tour? Any plans to hit the road?

Joshua: That’s the dream right there. I’ve already been thinking about the production design. Lot’s of fun ideas and plans…but first I gotta get the music just right and then look forward to when people will be able to gather together in a venue with me to sing along!
