A lot goes down behind the scenes of your favorite TV shows, and Sonny With a Chance was no different!
The show — which starred Demi Lovato, Sterling Knight, Tiffany Thornton, Brandon Mychal Smith, Doug Brochu and Allisyn Ashley Arm — aired for two seasons on Disney Channel from 2009 to 2011. Then, the sitcom was revamped into So Random!, which lasted for one season from 2011 to 2012.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities that I got. Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes. I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen,” Demi told Harper’s Bazaar in April 2020 about the early days of their career, which included their stint on Sonny With a Chance. “I do feel that a lot of the way some of my life was handled and lived led to me kind of having a bit of a downfall, just because I was so overworked, and I wasn’t dedicating enough time to my mental health or my personal life.”
That same month, the actor revealed during a Sonny With a Chance cast reunion that they were “so miserable and angry” about feeling “overworked.” But, despite the hardships they felt, Demi still has so much love for their former costars, especially Tiffany.
“When I went away to treatment for the first time, you were my biggest inspiration coming out of it because you dealt with all of those pressures of being a woman on TV,” the “Dancing With the Devil” singer recalled. Demi departed from their title role in October 2010 when entering a treatment center. They told People in April 2011, “I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery.”
At the time, Demi added, “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.”
When the show continued without them and with a new name, Demi told their former costars that, at the time, “I couldn’t have been happier for everybody. Adding, “I just wasn’t in a period of time when I was ready to be on camera again. I could not go back into that environment and there were other things that factored into it.”
But all in all, some amazing memories were had on the show’s set.
“I had the best time with you guys and when I think about the show, I miss you guys,” Demi said during the virtual. “If we were ever to do anything, I think we should just do a whole new thing.”
