Rumors have been swirling for months that Zendaya is going to star as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic The Little Mermaid. And her new hairdo may be all the proof we needed.

The 22-year-old actress attended a press event for her new movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home, in London, England on Monday, June 17, where she showed off the drastic new look. The normally brown-haired beauty was rocking bright red locks, and fans were pretty convinced that she dyed her hair because she’s starring in The Little Mermaid!

As fans know, the mermaid famously has bright red hair, so it definitely seemed like a possibility. But unfortunately, the former Shake It Up star put those rumors to rest once and for all, explaining that she dyed it as a tribute to one of the OG Spider-Man characters.

“YALL ZENDAYA DIED HER HAIR RED THIS IS NOT A DRILL DOES IT MEAN SHE’S REALLY PLAYING ARIEL? OR IS SHE TRYING TO TAKE ON THE ORIGINAL MJ PERSONA? YALL THIS IS TOO MUCH BY BRAIN CAN’T HANDLE IT,” a fan wrote on Twitter after the photos hit the web.

“MJ homage,” Zendaya replied with a heart.

Ugh, OK. We guess this isn’t the confirmation we’ve all been waiting for. ICYMI, there’s been talk that Zendaya may star as the iconic princess for quite some time now, and back in September, the Disney star admitted that she’d be totally down for the role.

“I loved The Little Mermaid. It is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time. I was obsessed with it when I was a little kid,” she told People Magazine. “It’s just a rumor so we will see. I am an actor, I just like good roles. Things I can soak into and really sink my teeth into. I always try to find characters that I can find some human connection to.”

As for Prince Eric, there have been rumors that Disney is looking at Harry Styles or Noah Centineo for the part, and um, we are so here for this. Ugh, the suspense is seriously killing us — can they just announce the cast already?!
