Get ready for your minds to be blown, Riverdale stans. The creator of the show, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, just revealed that Season 1 almost took a supernatural turn. Sabrina Spellman – AKA the infamous teenage witch of the Archie Comics – was going to appear in the last episode of the first season, giving the show a total supernatural turn. But as we know, the creators made Sabrina a separate series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – and it premieres on Netflix this month.

“During season 1 of Riverdale – before Riverdale exploded and found its footing as sort of a noir, crime, pulp show – we had said, ‘Maybe Season 2 will be like [the comic] Afterlife With Archie. We’ll do a big genre switch and it will be horror, and it will be Afterlife and Sabrina could come and be the antagonist,'” the 44-year-old showrunner explained. “There was even a time when we talked about the Season 1 cliffhanger being the arrival of Sabrina.”

Wait, what? Let us all just take a moment to think about Sabrina strolling on into the town of Riverdale in the last episode, giving the whole series a supernatural vibe – because, you know, she’s a witch and all.

“For various reasons, and I think partly because Riverdale found its footing as more crime show, that felt less and less like the right fit,” he said about the Riverdale writing team changing their minds. “It felt like if Riverdale is crime and pulp and all that stuff, then Sabrina could be horror. It felt like there was a separation between Greendale and Riverdale – magic should exist in Greendale, but not in Riverdale. That was the thought.”

So yeah, doesn’t look like any magic wizardy is going to come into Riverdale now that the show has an established theme of crime, mystery, and, of course, high school drama. But we’re glad there’s a new place for Sabrina on Netflix with the upcoming show. And based on the looks of the trailer, the new series is going to be a treat – a very dark, spooky treat! But that comes as no surprise, considering it’s coming from the creators of Riverdale – a total fan fave.
