Have you ever wondered how Ross Lynch landed his role on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? Well, thanks to a new YouTube video he posted with his brother Rocky Lynch, we have all the answers.

According to the 23-year-old, he went in for a bunch of auditions, which honestly isn’t out of the ordinary when trying to land an acting gig. However, the Austin & Ally star didn’t quite land the role until it was confirmed that he could dye his hair black. Wait, what?

That’s right! After auditioning twice with Kiernan Shipka and then going back for the screen test, they wanted to be absolutely sure Ross’ hair could be turned darker so that it wouldn’t look like Harvey and Sabrina are siblings rather than love interests.

“They wanted my hair to be dark because being blonde I looked too much like Kiernan,” the R5 and Driver Era member said. “So for the test, they were like, ‘Hey, we gotta figure out how to make your hair darker.’ So I was like, ‘Oh, I can do it. Like, I’ll just go to the store and pick up some dry shampoo.’ I just picked up some cheap stuff. My hair looked like I was an old man, though. It was like gray. I went to the screen test or whatever and our creator of the show, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, was like, ‘That’s not going to do.'”

Don’t worry, though! They had a plan B. Rather than trying to dye his hair black himself with some store-bought hair dye, it was decided that they bring in a professional to do the heavy lifting.

“They were like, ‘OK, we’ll hire a hair girl to come in,’ and she like sprayed my hair. Like three cans of this, like, hairspray stuff that made my hair black. It was crazy.”

Shockingly, that’s pretty much all it took for the actor to book the role, and it all happened extremely quickly from there.

“I booked the job and I flew up to Vancouver literally a day later and the whole catch was, ‘You’re going to be in Vancouver for nine months,’ and I told Rocky, too. I was like, ‘Are you cool with this?’ because we’re basically partners.”

Of course, Rocky was very supportive of his brother, and he also said it gave him time to focus on honing his music production skills. Despite having to stall their music for a bit, the boys are back together and are calling themselves The Driver Era. The best part? Now that Ross is back from Vancouver, the brothers are going on tour! We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to hear what they’ve been working on.
