Singer Selena Gomez is competing for the top spot! On Thursday, January 16, the 27-year-old songstress pleaded with fans on social media in hopes of making her latest album, Rare, take the number one spot on music charts. In a series of Instagram Stories, the “Lose You To Love” me explained to her 166 million followers that she’s currently tied with another “incredible artist.” Many fans have speculated that she was referencing her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.

“I told people before that, you know, it’s not about numbers for me, but I would love for the most important album I’ve ever released to become number one,” she explained in the videos. “So, if you don’t mind streaming it or listening to it on all the platforms, it would mean the absolute world to me. This is, again, something I’ve dreamed about for so long. But, regardless, I just hope that you guys are enjoying it and that it’s something that you all can just enjoy and have. So, no worries. Either way, I’m happy.”

The songstress also admitted to buying multiple copies of her own album.

“Am I like kind of desperate for doing this now?” Selena asked. “I don’t care. I don’t care, because this album is so rare.”

Shortly after she posted the Instagram Stories, fans on Twitter believed she was talking about beating Justin’s new single “Yummy.” He has also started a social media movement in hopes of getting his song to number one.

“Stan Twitter dragged Justin for promoting ‘Yummy’ but Selena is out here buying copies of her own album to get it to number one,” one person wrote. Another said, “Selena and Justin stans arguing about being desperate for sales.” 

However, it turned out that Selena’s actual competition wasn’t her ex at all. According to Billboard, rapper Roddy Ricch has taken over the top spot with his debut album Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. After he saw Selena’s Instagram Stories, the 21-year-old musician urged his fans to listen to her album.

“Stream Rare by Selena Gomez,” Roddy Ricch wrote on Twitter with a fire emoji.
