On Thursday, March 26, Troye Sivan uploaded a video on Twitter and told fans about a super scary situation he found himself in. The singer claimed that he had been catfished by Russian hackers who pretended to be Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg‘s dad.
In the video, the 24-year-old explained that “a couple of months ago,” his manager told him that she was contacted by Greta’s dad asking to work with Troye on a new project. So, naturally, the “My My My!” singer got the 17-year-old’s phone number and messaged her.
“I message her on WhatsApp and I say, ‘Hey Greta, this is Troye Sivan, I just wanted to say, I’m so inspired by your work. I think you’re the coolest thing ever. If there’s any way that I can be of any service, please let me know.’ Time goes by, she doesn’t reply,” he explained. “And then I get this call from [my manager] and she’s like, ‘T, I have a bad feeling.'”
Troye went on to explain that his manager was confused about why Greta’s dad seemingly spoke really bad English while they were on the phone, so she started watching and listening to interviews of him. As it turned out, she had spoken to another man on the phone.
“She’s like, ‘T, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I think we got catfished by a fake Greta Thunberg.’ Now, I died laughing. To me this was the most hysterical thing. That is the best plan ever, whoever thought of that is absolutely genius,” he said. “But also the fact that my ego was big enough to be like, ‘Yeah Greta Thunberg wants to chill, she’s a huge fan, we’re going to save the planet together, this is going to be f**king sick,’ it just completely, completely mortified me and made me want to die.”
Continuing the story, Troye said that the fake Greta eventually responded to his message. He never answered, and he later found out that Prince Harry had been pranked by the same people.
“It turns out it’s these Russian hackers that did this elaborate scheme. They got Bernie Sanders, they got Prince Harry, they almost got me… These Russian hackers totally have my phone number and are going around pretending to be Greta Thunberg,” he concluded.
