Parasite director Bong Joon-ho said it best, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,” — that, of course, includes K-dramas, too! Keep reading to see which K-drama you should watch based on your zodiac sign.

ICYMI, K-dramas are some of the most highly-addicting shows out there. Often, K-dramas are centered around a “main couple” romance, however, there are multiple other examples of dramas that fans can binge-watch that aren’t the typical romance trope — ever heard of a small Netflix show called Squid Game?

Yes, that’s right, while Squid Game definitely doesn’t scream romance — it’s still a South Korean TV show, marking it as a K-drama. And it also happens to be Netflix’s most streamed series of all time.

In case you were one of the few people who haven’t seen the show, Squid Game follows desperate citizens playing a life-or-death competition in order to win millions of dollars. The show first premiered in September 2021.

“I wanted to create something that would resonate not just for Korean people but globally. This was my dream,” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told the Guardian in October 2021. “We are living in a Squid Game world.”

“When I was working on the project, the goal was to rank No 1 on the Netflix US chart for at least a day,” he explained. “But it ended up being much more successful, the most watched show on Netflix ever. It’s very surprising. It shows that the global audience is resonating with the message I wanted to reflect.”

Season 2 of Squid Game is currently in production. “I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much but really we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience,” executive producer Kim Ji-yeon told Tudum in June 2022.

“We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story,” he added. “But there’s definitely a lot of pressure on how to make [season 2] even better.”

While it’s important to note that Squid Game is an outlier when it comes to K-dramas — as most are centered around romance, fantasy or mystery — it’s still considered one of, if not the, most successful K-drama of all time.
