Zayn Malik‘s second album Icarus Falls has finally arrived and boy did he deliver. Coming in with a tracklist that 27 songs deep, the 25-year-old didn’t hold back when it came to sharing all the music he’s been working oh so hard on. And while the album is generally filled with plenty of swoon-worthy love songs no doubt inspired by his relationship with Gigi Hadid, there is one song that might just be calling out his romance with former fiancé Perrie Edwards. And yes, Z is out here throwing some subtle shade.
So in the song “Common,” Zayn sings about a love that has certainly changed him for the better. He opens the tune admitting that he’s not the easiest to be with but this one person he has let in has been worth it.
“Always lookin’ out behind my fences
Always felt isolated, oh-oh-oh
I don’t know why I was so defensive
I’ll find a way to let you in”
But then, he makes a rather bold claim, admitting that he’s never been in love before, until now that is.
“I will die if I don’t try, damned if I ask why
This is somethin’ real, this is somethin’ right
Never been in love, never felt it all until now”
Call us shocked over here! Although Zayn is clearly head over heels in love with Gigi, he was once engaged to Perrie. He was with the 25-year-old Little Mix singer for four years before they called it quits and he even had a portrait of her tattooed on his arm. The pair had a rather public breakup, not too long after Z left his former band, One Direction, so it was certainly a time of change in his life. Zayn started dating Gigi in 2015 and besides a brief split, they’re still going strong and this song (whole album if we’re being honest here) is an ode to their love. And while we’re sure the love he feels for Gigi — who might just be his forever person — is obviously much different than the relationship he had with Perrie, it’s kind of wild he’s out here claiming he was never in love before. We don’t know what to believe anymore! But P is happily in a relationship now too, so all’s well that ends well, right?
