Leave it to Zayn Malik to crush hearts yet again with his latest confession about his time being a member of One Direction. It was in March of 2015 when he parted ways the group after five years of making music with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, and now, three years later, he’s confirming not only that he no longer speaks to any of his former bandmates, but that he never thought of them as friends. Ouch.

Speaking to British Vogue, the 25-year-old singer opened up about his time in the band and how their super fast rise to stardom when they were so young took a toll on them and their friendships.

“We went from theatres, to arenas, to stadiums — there was never any sort of bridge between. Just boom, boom, boom,” Zayn said. “I guess that kind of progression to any mind — but especially when you’re 17, 18 — it kind of affects you a little bit. People take it different ways — especially when there are five different personalities. The relationships had broken apart.”

Although he admits he considers himself to be a loner, he explained he doesn’t have a single friend from 1D.

“I have always been a bit like that, though — always a bit of an island. I don’t like to confer with too many people,” Zayn said. “I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time, to be honest with you. That’s just the way it is. There’s things that happen and things that were said after I left… Snide things. Small things that I would never have expected.”

UMM, OKAY, Z. He’s out here dropping some major bombs on us all. While there was drama between Zayn and Louis once upon a time (we all remember that Twitter fight), they both had since cleared the air with each other and patched things up after Louis’ mom Johannah Deakin passed away. Their reconciliation was something she wanted to happen too and in 2017, Zayn admitted all was good between them, although they naturally just weren’t as close as they once were.

“Yeah we spoke about that, we’re in touch, everything is on a civil level. It’s not the way it used to be, obviously we were a lot closer because we were together the entire time, spending 24 hours a day in the band and now we’re not so we’re living our own lives, we’re all growing as individual men and we still keep in touch and check in with each other not as much as we used to,” Zayn said.

The “Pillowtalk” singer also once revealed he never really spoke to Harry when they were in the band, which was another confession that came as a surprise to fans. It’s a bummer knowing the OG squad isn’t close anymore, but hey, at least we have the memories to look back on, right?
