Demi skipped the VMAs because she was working on something super exciting! She took to her Instagram Stories, writing, “Okay I can’t tell you guys what I’m doing today (you’ll find out super soon though)m but its making me SO HAPPY. I’m having SO MUCH FUN and I can’t stop laughing. Now go come up with your crazy a– theories as to what it might be!!!”

“I skipped the VMAs for a REASON,” she added. “Well that and I just hate award shows.”

And when she posted a snap of herself on set of the TV show Will & Grace a few hours later, we all practically lost it. We can’t wait to see what she’s got up her sleeve!

Ariana Grande

Ariana didn’t attend the awards show because she was halfway around the world! She’s currently on tour and had shows scheduled in the U.K. the day before and after the VMAs. It definitely wasn’t the same without her.

Billie Eilish

Not only did Billie win the award for Best New Artist, but she was also named the Push Artist of the Year. However, like Ariana, the singer was unfortunately unable to attend the event due to her tour schedule! She’s currently in Russia, so we totally understand!

Justin Bieber

It turns out, Justin’s just not a big fan of these kind of events in general.

Back in 2016, he wrote on Instagram, “No disrespect to anybody at any of the shows or the people running it. Nothing but love for you guys and your support. But I don’t feel good when I’m there nor after. I try to think of it as a celebration but can’t help feeling like people are rating and grading my performance.”

As sad as we are that he wasn’t there, we all just want the singer to be happy.

BTS

We were all pretty excited when the group won the award for Best K-Pop Song, but we were also pretty bummed when they didn’t take the stage to accept the award. So why weren’t they there? Well, BTS recently announced that they were taking an “extended hiatus” to rest and focus on their health! The boys have been working really hard for six years straight, so it’s totally reasonable for them to take a well-deserved break.

Ed Sheeran

The “Thinking Out Loud” crooner couldn’t make the awards show because he was busy singing his heart out to 50,000 people. Yep, he had his final show of the Divide Tour in Ipswich, England on the same night!

Selena Gomez

Although two songs that Selena was featured on made the nominations list this year, the singer was no where to be found at the VMAs. Why? Well, ever since she returned from rehab near the end of last year, she’s stayed pretty low-key.

One Direction

Why weren’t any of the members of One Direction at the awards show, you ask? Well, it’s probably because none of them were up for any awards this year! But get this, you guys — Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have all been teasing new music recently, so they’ll prbably show up next year!
