Don’t worry Shawn Mendes, everyone makes mistakes. The singer took to Twitter to apologize on Monday, February 4 after he accidentally liked a very offensive tweet.

The distasteful tweet was making fun of transgender people, and anyone who’s a fan of the “In My Blood” crooner knows that he would never support something like that. “Must of accidentally liked it scrolling down a feed, you know me and I’d never,” he explained. “Sorry.”

“Love you,” he added.

As J-14 readers know, the former Magcon star has been a public supporter of the LGBTQ community for a long time. Shawn’s close friend and cowriter, Teddy Geiger, announced her transition back in 2017, and Shawn was quick to let the world know he had Teddy’s back. “Love you,” he commented under her emotional announcement.

Plus, the 20-year-old even opened up to Beats 1 about the first time Teddy heard Shawn refer to her as “she.” Shawn explained there was nothing but pure joy on Teddy’s face.

“I wish everyone could experience this, because if they did, there would be no questions,” Shawn said. “There would be no ‘I don’t get it,’ no confusion about the process.”

Fans of the singer know that Shawn has faced some struggles of his own regarding rumors about his sexuality. Speaking to Rolling Stone last year, the “In My Blood” crooner admitted that he cares too much about what others have to say about his personal life, specifically when it comes to the rumors that he’s gay.

“I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true. This massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay. In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” the soon-to-be Grammys performer said. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”

If one thing is for sure, it’s that liking a transphobic tweet would be seriously out of character for Shawn – so clearly it was a total accident.
