A family spokesperson has confirmed that epilepsy was a factor in the tragic passing of Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce.

“Cameron’s tragic passing was due to a seizure as a result of an ongoing medical condition, and that condition was epilepsy,” a spokesperson for his family confirmed to E! News on Tuesday, July 9. “We are still trying to navigate our way through this extremely heart-wrenching time, and continue to ask for privacy so that the family and all who knew and loved him can grieve his loss and make arrangements for his funeral — which, in and of itself, is agonizing.”

As stated by the Epilepsy Foundation, the neurological disorder is the fourth most common and affects people of all ages. Epilepsy is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can sadly cause other health issues, as well.

Cameron passed at the age of 20 on Saturday, July 6. A spokesperson for his family announced the news of his death on Sunday.

They told Us Weekly in a statement, “The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”

Disney Channel also said in a statement on July 7, “From a young age, Cameron Boyce dreamed of sharing his extraordinary artistic talents with the world. As a young man, he was fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work. He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, cast mates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed.”

The star was best known for his roles in Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise, children’s TV series Jessie, Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. In May, the actor had just moved into an apartment with two of his best friends and former costars — Jessie castmate Karan Brar and Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything castmate Sophie Reynolds. Over 100 of Cameron’s famous friends and costars posted beautiful tributes after his shocking death.

He will always be remembered.
