You didn't think it was the end of the story, did you? It's official, you guys – Descendants 3 is happening! We'll just have to wait until Summer of 2019 to see it. Disney Channel made the announcement with a teaser trailer, and it leads us to believe that the third film will finally solve the big mystery about who Mal's dad is.
The cast took to social media to spill the new and share their excitement with fans, and we seriously don't know who's more pumped – us or them. Dove Cameron took to Instagram to reveal that not even the cast knew until quite recently.
Dove also took to Twitter to let us know that whatever it is that's happening in the third film, we're NOT. READY.

And now, rehearsals are currently under way. The cast is back together again, with Thomas Doherty, Dylan Playfair, and Sarah Jeffery all returning to reprise their roles as Harry Hook, Gil, and Audrey. Each member of the cast took to Instagram to share super cute behid-the-scenes pics of their first day back working together. Dove simply captioned the group shot she posted, "family" and now we're just over here crying.
After what felt like forever, Descendants 2 finally made its way to our television screens in July of 2017 and we can totally admit it was worth the wait. Seriously, the music is next level, those dance numbers are insane (hello Cameron Boyce doing a mid-air split IN WATER) and the new characters Uma, Harry, and Gil fit perfectly in this new chapter of the series. Obviously, everyone wanted to know now if and when a Descendants 3 movie is happening – and now it's time to celebrate. People had a feeling the third movie was about to be announced when Disney Channel released a little video. And sure enough, it was announcement on the night of the Zombies premiere.
What happened at the conclusion of the DCOM had our hopes up from the start. So here's how it ended: Spoiler alert. At the end of the movie, we see Uma herself still in the water with her tentacles and all giving us major Ursula from the end of The Little Mermaid vibes (so yeah, she's just like her mom.) But she then looks into the camera and delivers the line, "You didn't think this was the end of the story, did you?"
And as any fan knows, this is the same line Mal said at the end of the first movie when she looked right at the audience over Ben's shoulder, a hint of green flickering in her eyes letting us know D2 was going to happen.
Since Uma uttered those same few words again, the story was clearly not over. Plus, that little cliffhanger scene wasn't in the original version of the script. It was added later on, so that's saying definitely something. The cast was totally down to keep this series going too. When we spoke to Uma herself China Anne McClain, we just had to ask her about this mysterious final scene. While she played coy (since there hadn't been an official word from Disney about another movie at the time), she admitted she would be so ready to come back.
"Descendants is so great and I really loved playing Uma. I really hope that in the future, since I know this is not the last time you’re going to see the VKs, I really hope that I’m involved," China exclusively said to J-14. "Every time Disney asks me to do something, I’m like 'Yeah!' That’s my family. They’ve done such great things for my career and I’m very grateful for that. Anytime they want me, they can just call."
China believed in her heart the core Villain Kids Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos' journey wasn't over yet, and now she's ready to bring Uma back to Auradon to wreak even more havoc.
There's still plenty of unfinished business with Uma at the end of this movie too since she's out at sea being a literal sea witch like her mom, still rather bitter she didn't get her way. Someone else who wanted to make it happen? Dove Cameron. The actress told Access Hollywood on the red carpet that will make as many of these movies as she can.
"Oh yeah, I want to see Descendants 3, 4, 5, 6. All of it. Bring it on!" Dove said. And she has some ideas about what she would like to see go down with Mal in another movie.
"In the third one, I think I would like to see [Mal] really, truly fledge herself out as an individual and kind of unlock this weird limitless, chosen one power she has threw being the most evil's daughter. Because I really do think that's an incredible combination to take the power of the most evil person but the heart of a good human and couple those things together. I want her to become her own individual. And I really don't care about the love story! It's a beautiful thing that adds to it and I love romance but I would really love for her to Mulan her way in the third film and just became this amazing, limitless entity," she said in an interview with Movie Maniacs
Cameron has said he is down to come back for another movie too, despite that he's ready to move on from his Disney days.
"My tenure has been abnormally long for the average Disney kid – most only last three or four years. I’ve been around the Disney Channel for seven years, so this has been on the horizon for a while. And even now I can’t say for sure that I’m out after the uproar from Descendants fans insisting on a Descendants 3, so I could be in for one last ride after all," Cameron said to Vulkan Magazine.
His allegiance to the series is legit the reason why he has one more Disney Channel chapter left in his career, and that is a true testament as to how important these movies are not only to the fans, but to the actors who bring these beloved characters to life. Oh and Cam already has a dream plot in mind too.
"I want the barrier to come down on the Isle so the parents come to Auradon and we have an epic duel between the kids and the parents. That would be ideal. That's my dream," he said to Teen Vogue. I picture [Carlos] in the third movie as sort of like the guy with like 18 computers all of a sudden and doing all of the planning. I picture Carlos as a really pivotal part of the group and sort of a component that can't be replaced in the group," he said to Movie Maniacs.
We're here for it, Cameron. Sofia Carson, the only and only Evie, added more fuel to this D3 fire when she said that making another movie is for sure something everyone in the cast is on board for. You could tell just how excited she was when she took to social media after the announcement.
"You know what, the whole cast would love for that to happen. I think it’s up to the fans, to see their reaction, if they love the second film as much we do, hopefully, they’ll be a third," she said in an interview. "Hopefully! The cast has a group chat and we're always texting each other like 'have you heard, have you heard?" But we haven't heard," she said on The View. And she even took to Twitter to share that she's missing her blue 'do.
Clearly Sofia is ready to get back into character, that's for sure. She too has something really cool in mind she would love to see happen to her character.
"I would love a Descendants 3 but Evie out of the four VKs, maybe Evie and Carlos, she was never really that mean, her evil characteristic was being vain. You've never really seen a wicked side of Evie. So I don't know if in Descendants 3 something happens, either she goes under some spell and we see a truly wicked side of Evie and she becomes kind of villainous and poisoning apples for real," Sofia said to Movie Maniacs. OK, now that would be really interesting to see since she feels right at home un Auradon. As for Booboo Stewart's plot thoughts? He's ready for the OG villains to make their comeback.
"I do think there's a lot to explore. I would love to see our parents again, I think that would be very, very, very cool and would create a lot of drama there," he said to Movie Manaics about what he would like to see happen in the next installment.
So no joke, all of the main stars have put a lot of thought into what could happen next. When it comes to the movies' director, the legend that is Kenny Ortega admitted he already has a dream cast in mind for D3 that features Vanessa Hudgens, who you know he worked with on the High School Musical, franchise, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.
"I would like Miley to come back and I would like Vanessa to come back. How about the Jonas Brothers could all come back and be our Lost Boys? I’m a big fan of so many of the artists that have come out of the channel and have gone on to have great careers, those that I've had an opportunity to work with and those that I haven’t had an opportunity to work with," Kenny said to People's Choice. OK, Kenny is getting all of our hopes up with that one.
Considering that 13 million people tuned into D2, making it the second most-watched DCOM of all time (behind another one of Kenny's movies High School Musical 2), it's safe to say everyone needed another movie in this saga. Plus, Kenny's success with HSM is a good indication of what's to come. He really took things to new heights with High School Musical 3, so we bet he'll really wow us once again with Descendants 3. All we can say is 2019 can't come soon enough!
