If you’re anything like us, each year you wait with bated breath for Time‘s 100 Most Influential People list, which comes out annually. Well, this time around, Taylor Swift was honored by the magazine in literally the sweetest way ever. How, you ask? With a tribute from Shawn Mendes, of course!
That’s right, you guys! The “In My Blood” crooner wrote the kindest things about the 29-year-old, and it made a ton of sense that it came from him — especially since he joined her on several dates of her 1989 World Tour a couple years back.
“I’ve been a Taylor Swift fan for as long as I can remember,” the 20-year-old wrote. “But it wasn’t until I met and got to know her that I understood how wonderful a person she truly is.”
The “Lost in Japan” singer then went on to compliment the Grammy Award-winning artist for her uncanny ability to connect with her audience, and to somehow put all of their feelings — both overwhelming and seemingly insignificant — into words and melodies that are so incredibly relatable.
“Taylor makes the job of creating music for millions of people look easy,” he continued. “It all comes from her — her belief in magic and love, and her ability to be as honest and raw as possible. She’s the master of putting the perfect amount of thought into not overthinking, and that’s why her music connects so well.”

@taylorswift is one of the 100 most influential people of 2019. "The magic of Taylor Swift doesn’t come from the lights, dancers or fireworks (although all of that is incredible)," writes @shawnmendes, "but from the electrifying connection that she has with the people who are there to see her." The Grammy-nominated heartthrob then went on to explain that he learned so much about Taylor from touring with her, and how each stadium they played was filled with so much magic and love. Plus, as diehard Swifties ourselves, we can totally vouch for the fact that nothing is more magical than a Taylor Swift concert — not even Disney World.
“I was so lucky to be able to open for a handful of her stadium shows on the 1989 World Tour,” he added. “And I quickly learned that the magic of Taylor Swift doesn’t come from the lights, dancers or fireworks (although all of that is incredible) but from the electrifying connection that she has with the people who are there to see her. There’s an overwhelming feeling in the air. The feeling of your heart racing in your chest with excitement — so much so that by the time you get to ‘Love Story,’ all you want to do is pick up your phone and text every person you know to say how much you love them. The feeling is so thick, you feel like you could reach out and grab it to keep forever.” Aww!
But wait, there’s more. Shawn also revealed that the “Look What You Made Me Do” songstress is one of his biggest inspirations, and even though we think he’s already accomplished it, his goal is to make his audience feel the same way Tay’s audience feels when they watch her perform live.
“Taylor makes anyone older feel young again and anyone young feel they can do anything,” he said. “It’s so rare and so special. If there is one thing I want to achieve in my career and life, it’s that.”
OK, we’re not crying… YOU ARE! Shawn is quite literally one of the sweetest celebs in the business, and this tribute gave us some major chills. Plus, we think we can all agree that Tay deserves this honor right now — especially considering the fact that she’s been masterfully teasing what fans believe to be a new single. Seriously, April 26 can’t come soon enough!
