Fans are speculating that Niall Horan‘s new song, “What A Time,” might be about his ex-girlfriend Hailee Steinfeld, so we decided to investigate! The anthemic new tune, which is featured on Julia Michaels’ new EP, Inner Monologues Part 1, is all about missing your ex and thinking back to the good times they had together. So yeah, it’s definitely possible that the One Direction member could be singing about the 22-year-old.
“I know we didn’t end it like we’re supposed to / And now we get a bit tense / I wonder if my mind just leaves out all the bad parts,” Niall belts out in beautiful, acoustic song. “I know we didn’t make sense / I admit it that I think about it sometimes / Even though I know it’s not so distant / Oh, no, I still wanna reminisce it.”
Ugh, if it is about Hailee, we may or may not be crying. Fans quickly started speculating, and some took to Twitter to share their thoughts. “It’s bound to be about Hailee,” one fan tweeted, while another added, “For all of you who were pressed and made assumptions and insulted Hailee without even knowing if she was talking about Niall at all, I think Julia’s collab with him tells you everything.”

OK, so we decided to do some digging, and it turns out, the 25-year-old didn’t actually write the tune! Julia revealed in an interview with Austalian DJ Smallzy that she sent it to him after she finished it. “I had written it with a few friends of mine. It’s one of those songs where I really wanted a guys perspective on it,” the 25-year-old “Issues” singer explained. “The minute we wrote it I thought, ‘Niall would be absolutely beautiful on this.'”

So that clears that up! But that definitely doesn’t mean that the “Slow Hands” singer isn’t thinking about his ex while he sings it, right? Plus, Hailee has probably heard the new song since she’s best friends with Julia!
As J-14 readers know, it was reported that after months of dating, Niall and Hailee called it quits back in December. But after the breakup, things got pretty messy when the Pitch Perfect actress seemingly shaded the 1D crooner on her Instagram Story — twice. First, Hailee posted a pic of a billboard for her movie Bumbleebee, writing, “I bet you think of me when you see this driving down sunset.” And since fans quickly pointed out that the 25-year-old was in LA at the time, it definitely could have been directed at him.
Some fans even thought that the “Love Myself” songstress called Niall a “narcissist”, when she reposted Julia’s Instagram Story that said, “New Years resolution: Stop dating narcissists.”
“God bless you @juliamichaels,” Hailee added. “Preach it.” The singer later denied the post was about Niall.
Well, regardless of who the song is about, it’s seriously so catchy and we can’t stop listening to it!
