TikTok's Biggest Scandals: Charli D'Amelio, Bryce Hall and More

Ever since TikTok blew up in 2019, some of the app’s biggest stars have found themselves in hot water with small online snafus or even bigger slip-ups.

In April 2021, internet stars Jaden Hossler and Nessa Barrett made headlines for their rumored romance after collaborating on a song called song “La Di Die,” which was released in February 2021. Jaden’s ex-girlfriend, Mads Lewis, was the first to share that something romantic might be going on between the two budding musicians with a since-deleted TikTok video. In the short clip, she claimed that Nessa stole Jaden from her. At the time, Josh Richards (who previously dated Nessa) got involved and defended his best friend and ex. When it turned out the pair might actually be more than friends, Josh was forced to address the entire situation on his “BFFs” podcast.

The former Sway House member told listeners that he wanted to keep the drama offline and made it clear that nothing shady happened between Nessa and Jaden when they were in other relationships. “I’m moving on from it. They’re moving their way,” Josh said. “I wish the best. That’s that.”

As for whether or not he ever plans to be friends with Jaden or Nessa again, Josh said that only time will tell. “Even though this is, like, a situation, obviously, I don’t think anyone wants to be in, I’m never gonna be wishing bad things to happen to either of them,” he shared on the podcast. “I’m always just gonna be along for the support and having them kill it, do whatever … I’m never gonna be the guy that’s being malicious.”

Another major scandal that caused a huge controversy with two of the app’s stars was the dinner drama surrounding Charli and Dixie D’Amelio. The sisters received tons of hate online after fans criticized the way they treated a personal chef in a November 2020 YouTube video. Viewers slammed the girls, claiming they had “no manners” and were “rude” in the video’s comment section.

Responding to the backlash in a tear-filled Instagram Live following the incident, Charli begged followers to “just, like, be nice.”

“I feel like it’s not that hard, and you can say whatever,” the internet star said. “You can say I’m disrespectful, you can say I don’t have basic human decency, but at the end of the day, I’m still a person.”

Chase, Charli and Landon Drama

After Chase Hudson released his new song “All the Things I Hate About You” in July 2022, many fans speculated the lyrics are about his ex-girlfriend Charli D’Amelio. At one point in the song he appears to call Charli a “homie hopper,” a possible dig at his ex after it was revealed she was dating Chase’s old friend Landon Barker in June 2022.

Josh Richards and Nessa Barrett Back Together?

After Josh announced their split in May 2021 and Nessa swiftly moved on with her ex’s former BFF, Jaden Hossler, the two have sparked reconciliation rumors! In May 2022, Nessa and Josh were spotted on a walk in L.A. together shortly after she and Jaden confirmed their breakup.

Josh denied dating rumors in May 2022, however a month later Griffin Johnson revealed that Nessa and Josh were back together during an episode of Tea Talk. He backpedaled, saying, “No, I said when they were together.” Josh, for his part, added, “I feel like we’re digging ourselves such a deep hole right now.” It’s unclear where they really stand.

Griffin Johnson’s Cheating Scandal

Rumors that Griffin cheated on Dixie started swirling in July 2020. Both internet stars denied the rumors, but a few days later, in August 2020, she announced that they had split. Although it’s unclear what really went down, Griffin issued an apology to Dixie via social media a month after their breakup.

“I want to publicly apologize to Dixie for the hurt that I have caused. I am human, I am not proud of some of my choices,” he shared in September 2020. “I have dealt with a lot of this in an immature manner because honestly, I had no idea what to do. I’m not asking for forgiveness, I just want to cut the bulls–t and let everyone understand my thoughts and know that I am sorry.”

Bryce and Addison’s 2nd Split

Bryce was accused of cheating on Addison, which he’s since denied, and it led to their second breakup. “I’ll be honest. I ended it,” he shared during and April 2021 episode of the “BFFs” podcast. He explained that although she believed that he didn’t cheat on her, “at the same time, the trust wasn’t fully there … she knows I didn’t cheat.”

“I was just not in the mindset for a relationship,” Bryce added. “We were going to deal with everything privately and then it became public.”

Lil Huddy’s Kissing Drama

In July 2020, Chase Hudson admitted to kissing fellow TikTok star Nessa despite having just broke up with Charli. This started a massive fight between the Hype and Sway houses. Following a confrontation between the members, the drama died down and Charli announced that she and Chase “were just not right for each other” romantically. They’ve since remained friends.

Josh Richards’ Instagram Live

In April 2020, Josh accidentally exposed himself during an Instagram Live while attempting to recreate a TikTok trend at the time. Following the incident, he issued an apology via social media.

“I want to apologize about what happened yesterday during the live. I have a responsibility because of followers I’ve been blessed with. Last night, I took advantage of that. I’m going to try to think harder before I act,” Josh wrote. “It was never my intention to have leaked what got shown, but I made that mistake and understand the consequences.”
